George “Jesse” Simmons

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend, George “Jesse” Simmons, passed away January 28th, 2010, after a long battle with illness, surrounded by his loved ones.

Jesse was born September 10th 1931 in Bloomington IL, to Arthur and Helena Simmons.  He married the love of his life, Edith Alford Simmons on June 24 1951, and their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake City temple.  Jesse was a retired building contractor who created beautiful homes that families were able to enjoy for years.  He took great pride in his work and made sure every angle was straight.  His motto was, “If I can’t fix, it ain’t broke.”  After retiring he served as a volunteer for many organizations.  He and his wife delivered lunches for seniors, always with a cheerful smile and a joke to brighten their day.  Most recently, Jesse worked at Sign of the Kingdom and brought joy to all those he met.

Jesse was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who served faithfully in many callings. His greatest love in life was his family.  Jesse had many brothers and sisters that shared happy times together growing up.  He was beloved by his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jesse was always the center of any family gathering, with his great sense of humor and beautiful singing voice.  He was extremely generous and giving of his time and talents, never letting an opportunity to go by to be of service.

Jesse’s survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Edith, three children, Linda (John) Bryant, Steven (Lisbeth) Simmons, Jeannette Simmons, nine grandchildren and their spouses, and ten great-grand children, his brothers Frank(Alta) Simmons and Edward (Anita) Simmons and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, ten brothers and sisters, an infant daughter, Connie Lou.

The family would like to express their thanks to the staff at St. Mark’s hospital, with special thanks to Dr. Hacking and Dr. Kurrus and Carolyn West for their loving concern.

Services will take place Sunday, January 31, 2010 at 6:30 pm at Lakeridge 8th ward chapel, 7525 W. Washington Rd, Magna, where a viewing will be held at 5:30 preceding the funeral.  Services will also take place Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 2:00 pm at Emmons-Macey-Steffey Funeral Home, 1303 12th St.  Lawrenceville, IL, where a viewing will be held at 1:00 pm preceding the funeral.  Interment will be at May Chapel Cemetery, Lawrenceville, IL following the services.
